Many times when it comes to information Americans are "penny-wise and pound foolish". We've been conditioned to swallow whole everything reported on television, mainstream news outlets and from the 'news analysts' employed by various political groups and think tanks. They are passed off to the pubic as impartial and expert. But, they are far from impartial or expert on the subject. They are spokespersons for a certain viewpoint. Their job is to herd the public perception into a narrow comprehension. Noam Chomsky says succinctly -
"The leading student of business propaganda, Australian social scientist Alex Carey, argues persuasively that “the 20th century has been characterized by three developments of great political importance: the growth of democracy, the growth of corporate power, and the growth of corporate propaganda as a means of protecting corporate power against democracy."
Have you ever wondered why all the major corporate news outlets seem to report the same trivial nonsense, often with the same verbiage and archival footage? Why every mainstream news outlet reports the latest Lindsey Lohan calamity or the most recent Kardashian family fart? Why every corporate news outlet has the same spin on the same stories which are often reported in the same order and with the same lack of historical perspective and severely limited viewpoint? One would think that what is reported as 'news' is actually manufactured productions of events, minus pertinent meaningful facts, with skewed sketches of the actors who initiated the reported happenings, reporting not meant to inform or empower with knowledge; but to shape the public mind into a fenced in understanding.
We as a society are captive to the information we receive. It influences our collective thought immensely. The corporate media can instill national fear, outrages, hysteria and or apathy; and use the energy of those emotions fed to the pubic by corporate media board rooms to accomplish all manner of evil in the world with our enthusiastic consent. Because we don't know any better. Which brings me to the sad fact...we don't want to know any better. We've become comfortable with the patronizing, induced outrage, distractions and celebrity worship that we call 'news'. We're led around by our emotions while corporate interests profit from our ignorance, our willing ignorance. We only want to be good Americans and do as we're told, to think as we're directed. Thinking things through for ourselves is too complicated. Trusting alternative sources is taboo, made taboo by the very corporate media that is bamboozling the nation into economic collapse...an economic collapse that corporate interests will profit from extravagantly.
We need to nurture alternative means of information. It's almost unbelievable that we've been solidly in the free information age of the internet for 20 years, and mainstream corporate media misinformation is still so prevalent in the minds of Americans. We've been programmed to ridicule alternative information sources. Facts have become taboo, all that matters is the official corporate story. The public clings to that story like children cling to the idea of the Easter bunny. Mainstream media has made itself as comforting as a bedtime story. This link is to alternative information sites. It is non-partisan and eclectic. Take your time...check the information. Becoming de-programmed from mainstream media is time consuming at first. But soon you will develop an extra sense of knowing what sounds untrue, incomplete or totally manipulative.
The first step to human healing is truth.
